I guess heterosexism shines through even in the homosexual fanbase. Since most are raised with a notion of a 'man/woman' relationship, even when it comes to same sex relations, one is seen as the dominate 'male' and one the submissive 'female'. I guess they just decided that Fate fits that 'male' role.

Of course in reality, same sex relations actually function better than heterosexual relationships because same sex couples are free from such gender roles. Course other things such as amount of income can still affect the power balance.

Why would "being better at fighting" be linked to "being a man"?

That may be true in boxing or other ways of fighting with a strong emphasis on muscles, but not in magic, and definitely not in the nanoverse.

This all depends on how we interpret the situation of the couple in our social reality.

So, if for us in homosexual couples there is always one performing a "male role" and the partner the "female role" because society tells us to think that way, then we'll try to make those stereotypes fit in every couple. And this will be possible always. For example for the couple of Nanoha and Fate we can say that Fate has the male role, because she's working away and according to our society that is a task mostly for males. But this is only because we can tag it as "male" in this kind of society, however we can use other kind of stereotypes like submissive/dominant (which is not equal to male/female, even if in our society the dominant is often the male, it's not the same), or even tag Fate as the female considering other factors like having a more "feminine" personality.

It all depends on the person, but personally I don't see this kind of stereotypes often in serious (non porn) nanofate doujinshi, or in fanfiction.

You can see it the way you want, but it doesn't mean that there is a male and a female.

Well, it's not quite reached that level of normality, yet. There certainly has been a great improvement in the percieved flexibility of women's roles over the past few decades, but we are still prone to fall into patriarchal mindsets. It's even worse in Japan, though, as their society is far more sexist than ours.

But yeah. Nanoha as a franchise has always been breaking the mold. Mecha-style magic girl action, mage being an occupation, the increasing age of the characters, and stable career women. It's the fans who warp things a bit to fit their social image. It's not really their fault though, that's just the environment they grew up in. All we can do is recognise the issue, and make sure we don't fall into such trappings ourselves.

Likewise, I don't like fanfics that are too much out of character.

Hayate's hair doesn't grow at all. That's why her red and yellow ornaments don't move.

Nanoha and Fate don't seem to cut their hair. But there are lots of other characters:

• Shamal's hair stays short. Vita's hair pretty much keeps the same length too. Not too sure about Signum. (And anyway, what kinda knight has such long hair?)

• Arisa has had her hair cut short.

• Subaru keeps her hair short; Teana's hair length doesn't seem to move much.

OTOH, Kyaro's hair has grown quite a bit after StrikerS.

Well it seems that those two don't cut their hair at all... makes me wonder why when Hayate cuts hers (assumption here) while Tena seems to have grown hers a little from the cover of the Sound track I saw.

Ok, so let's assume that I think the yuri is canon.

I certainly think Nanoha is Fate's first love, for obvious reasons. However, I'm not so sure about Nanoha. I mean, we all know how dense the girl is. She's never shown strong special treatment towards anyone. She treats pretty much everyone the same (in similar contexts, ie, she treated Vita the same way as Fate within the 'we're enemies but let's talk' context).

Vivio however, was the first we see to invoke a strong, emotional response from Nanoha. Specifically, the scene where she actually breaks down crying because Vivio was kidnapped. We had not seen such strong, raw emotion from her ever before. Scenes like Nanoha and Fate's farwell at the end of season one pale in comparison.

I don't think it would be the same if Vivio was older. I think Nanoha's strong response came from her materal side, which, in my opinion, is genetically stronger than romantic attachment.

Regarding Nanoha breaking down into tears, I believe it's because she's become very attach to Vivio in the recent months I'm unsure how long was Vivio with section six before her abduction I think it's partly due that Nanoha is older now and the way she's become so close to the little girl who simply sees Nanoha as her mother seems to have left a pretty deep impression.

However, my stance doesn't really change. Shedding happy tears over a dear friend's return (a reaction that she could potentially have for any dear friend returning from 'I could go to jail' circumstances), is still a far 'cry' away from Nanoha's BAAAAW-fest over Vivio.

It's fair to say that Nanoha is pretty (conveniently) dense when it comes to her own feelings and she's a friend to all but Fate was just a little bit more special to her. When she met Fate and learned a little bit more about her, it was the first time she felt really passionate about something in her life. (Was it because she got beat up for the first time in her life? lol) Hell, even protecting her city became sort of secondary when Fate came into the picture. (Thank god, right? There isn't enough room for another CCS.)

With her friends at the time, she was very, "They're great and I'm glad I met them but..." but with Fate, she was like, "I just CANNOT leave the person alone!" Her official reason for her interest in Fate was because she couldn't stand seeing her being alone but remember how she and Yuuno talked about being alone? Her reaction to his life story was very different than it was with Fate's. She was sad but it wasn't like she was in a rush to make him the happiest little ferret in the universe. lol To me, this difference shows that aware or not, Nanoha had some VERY strong, protective feelings for Fate.

Now, Vivio... I consider her to be Fate#2 in some sense. A young (blond lol) lonely girl with nobody to take care of her? Nanoha to the rescue! Vivio was the second person Nanoha felt so passionately about. Remember that Nanoha didn't originally intended to become her mother but it just happened that way due to circumstances (Subaru, Vivio crying for "mama" all the time). I suppose the way Nanoha just stepped up to the plate can be considered her maternal side shining through, though I'm personally not convinced and I see something very unnatural about 19 year olds suddenly wanting to be mothers. (I thought that kind of thing doesn't kick in until around 25!) In the manga, they're almost like bros lol but that's because they know each other and Vivio's becoming a mini-Nanoha...

Another thing I wonder... what if Fate wasn't adopted by Lindy? Would Nanoha have had her parents adopt her?

In StrikerS, a defenseless little girl (13 years younger) has been abducted by the Big Bad, an organisation that's bad enough to have put strong people (Subaru, Zafira, Vice) in hospital. It's not exactly the same level of angst.

On the subject of the pic Feito posted, I find it kind of strange since it would give the impression of something else if someone was not to watch the show but know that Yunno is a boy, won't you guys agree?

Nanoha/Yunno are so freaking rare it's actually funny, but I still think they make a great couple if there was no NanoaFate.

I'm unsure how to define Yunno feeling and reaction to Nanoha at times, they seem a little bit more close than simply friends at times, but at other times they're simply friends.

Take for example the before Strikers Manga where Yunno and Nanoha high five, quite friendly and so on. Come Strikers in one of the episode those two simply couldn't meet eye to eye without blushing crimson, or the interesting atmosphere they got their also seems to interest me of what could have happened if Nanoha and Yunno was to hook up.

With so much HHNNGGGH with the Nanoha and Fate's "happy family", we can't complain.

For me Subaru/Teana are the secondary pairing of the series during Strikers, and Nanoha/Fate are above of them in the plot, and in terms of people drooling for more.

I will admit that Seven Arcs handles the fan pandering decently enough. They haven't done any hardcore fan pandering (ie, NanoFate kiss scenes, continually stating Nanoha and Fate are in a lesbian relationship, naming Vivio 'Vivio Testarossa-Harlaown-Takamachi', etc). They're also nice enough to include a little pandering to the minority crowd (the Nanoha and Yuuno scene in ep 8, them being seen together at the end of StrikerS, etc).

They've done it gradually enough where it still makes sense in-universe if they suddenly declared "Yeah, Nanoha and Fate are married! Look forward to the flashback in the next chapter of Vivid!" As opposed to, say, revealing that Regius is actually alive. That wouldn't make sense, since we clearly see him die. Course it's not like Regius actually has fans, but if he did, and Seven Arcs revived him to pander to them, that would be some old bullshit.

You know what it's really about, though: Keep the women away from men so the Japanese shut-ins can't fly into a jealous rage the way they did with Kannagi. Note that the only female in this show attached to a man is Amy and she was a bit player (Erio and Caro came as a package to begin with and it's not like there's romantic development visible with them either) and was promptly shoved off into the kitchen. Even if you were to pair off a secondary character like Signum or Vita with a man, can you imagine the butthurt? They'd be holding street protests screaming about what a slut she was and burning Figmas.

Their intentions with that character are clear, he only got 2 minutes of screen time in strikers after being someone of high importance for his friend during the previous series. He was purposely shafted due to his low popularity, leaving him with no plot relevance and no chances with Nanoha, instead they put him in the friendship zone supporting Nanoha and Fate in their relationship and family, before removing him from the cast.
The NanoYunno fans in Japan are almost inexistent, that's another reason why they went all the way with NanoFate after Strikers, you just need to see that there are 0 artists supporting pairings with him now, and that the guy isn't even in the list of important persons to NanoFate's family in Vivid.

I know people are going to take this the wrong way, but I assure you, I'm not trolling, I'm just trying to start a civil, constructive discussion.

Ok, so I'm not too fond of NanoFate. Why? Is it because I'm a fan of the ferret? Not at all. The main reason is that I find NanoFate to be very boring. I mean, where's the drama? Where's the awkwardness? They never argue, and they do stuff like change in front of each other, but there's zero reaction. There's no desire in their eyes when they look at each other. Where's that spark?

I know some people say how they're in a 'mature adult relationship', whatever that's supposed to be, but I think that's BS. I mean, my parents are in their 50s, they've been married for 25 years, and they still give each other little kisses before they leave, and they're still active sexually. The period when relationships lose that sexual attractedness (which NanoFate seems to imply) is when the couple is old and wrinkled.

For Nanoha and Fate not to show the slightest bit of desire for each other when they're only in their 20's... I'm sorry, but I dare say they're on the path to break-up-ville.

Naturally I'm only considering what's shown on screen. They could be screwing like rabbits off screen, but I can't be entertained by what is not shown. I mean, all it would take would be something like a little jealous look on Fate's face when she sees Nanoha and Yuuno together to add an interesting dynamic to things.

TL;DR, I don't like NanoFate not because I have anything against yuri, I just think this particular pairing is uninteresting.

My prefered alternatives? I think Subaru/Teana is a lot better. Seeing Subaru being her playful self, and then Teana getting all flustered over it is quite entertaining. It has that spark. And then the times Subaru doubts herself, Teana is right there to smack her upside the head and tell her to knock it off. Where as Nanoha and Fate are more on the similar side, Subaru and Teana offers a good contrast.

In that vein, I think Nanoha/Vita would be much more interesting. What with Nanoha being so dense, and then Vita getting all aggrivated when she can't get through to her.

Sure, problem free relationships might be ideal if you're the one in said relationship, but in regards to entertainment media (which, obviously, Nanoha is), conflict is necessary.

And that's my opinion. So, what do you think? What do you find appealing about NanoFate that I might be missing? Are there other yuri pairings you like more? Do you perhaps agree with me? Please, feel free to share.

Randomly clicked through it a bit and picked up a few things:

Nanoha and Fate were the ones who picked out Yuuno's glasses.

I guess Chrono and Rossa have been friends for a very long time.

Chrono talks about Nanoha and Yuuno's relationship, and Yuuno replies that they're childhood friends and that it's the same for Chrono and Fate. But Chrono reminds him that he and Fate are siblings. Yuuno still insists that they're just childhood friends (but his voice trails off a bit). Chrono says that to Nanoha, Yuuno is more than that. The one who introduced her to magic, who taught her how to use it, her pet ferret, etc. Yuuno tries to correct him on the ferret thing, but Chrono replies "Weren't you a ferret that evolved into a human?" At this point, Yuuno gives up.

Vivio and her friends constantly show up to hang out at the Infinite Library. They have lots of fun there. Yuuno notes how Vivio is a lot like Nanoha in many ways.

You shouldn't be surprised, this is nothing new, the fact was known from the interviews from long ago, they left Yuuno as a supportive figure for the family since Nanoha x Fate proved to be what the fans want, and now we see from his own point of view how he sees Nanoha in the present: as a little sister. In this track he calls Vivio his friend, and he puts Fate in a similar position to Nanoha.

Also NanohaxFate+Vivio were already known as the Takamachi family, nothing new there either.
