First of all, my apologies to the denizens of the Force chapter thread I helped permanently derail by starting this discussion there.
Let's use this thread for general board related discussion and comments to avoid further derailment.
There are many good points in the discussion so far, I'll try to properly respond to as many of them as I can so everyone knows where I stand and where I'd like to go with this. For now I'll get to work on a 'report post' system to get my attention to potential spamming and rule-breaking content more quickly.
What do you think about removing the "ID:" field that identifies specific posters within the same thread? On the one hand, it makes it easier for Anonymous users to reply to each other (and makes it easier to spot samefagging) but it also creates a reputation for that user based on his posts in that thread. This goes against the principle of anonymous forums that I mentioned earlier, but is it a necessary evil?
A technical point: most home internet connections do not have fixed IP addresses, so a user's ID field is liable to change every few weeks. This makes it rather difficult to build up a lasting reputation. In any case, I can't imagine most people being able to remember arbitrary ID hashes to associate reputations with them, for the most part. On the other hand, they are pretty good for detecting samefagging. I vote keep.
sounds good to me.

I agree. My ID tends to change several times during the day because I'm on an unstable connection but the IDs are good when people are attempting to cover their dubious actions. So you've got my vote for keeping.
Also, while you're here JJS. Could you turn on the duplicate image detector thing again? I don't know why it was turned off in the first place but this board keeps getting clogged with duplicate images.

It had been turned off because the same image would occasionally be valid in more than one thread. I have noticed the same images coming up more often lately so I'll turn the dupe detector back on when I get home.
And there you have it folks. All posts going forward will have the Report link over there next to the Delete post link. Clicking the link will drop a note directly to my phone.
All reports are logged into a database so please don't abuse the system or you'll find yourself banned instead.
UPCOMING SERVER MAINTENANCE
Hey guys, the hard drive in this server is beginning to show signs of failure so I've asked the datacenter to replace it. Having learned my lesson the hard way last time(s) something horrible happened, I have several backups ready to go once they get the new drive installed and OS reloaded. The downtime will hopefully be only a few hours.
Thanks for your patronage.
Thanks for letting us know. Good luck, JJS.
"a few hours" later...
Anyhow the server is finally back online so you can resume posting more awesome content. I'm sure I borked some things in the config so I'll be working those out over the next few hours.
Whoohoo! Welcome back!
JJS, there's a little hiccup I wanted to report. It might be just me but when I post with pictures, I have to manually refresh the page to see them. I might need to clear my cache though.

Forgot to load a module that prevents caching of html pages, it should be fixed now. Thanks for the report!
Um, I accidentally broke posting with a code change I made. Thanks to no one for finding a way to report it to me ;)
Change reverted, you can post now...
Nobody posts anymore... :/

that's not true......even though there's not a flood of posts, the posts here are only post awesome posts
